Pro Glass Cleaning Tips

Keeping glass clean around your home or business can be a challenge.  Like anything, there’s an art and science to effective glass cleaning.  We’ve compiled some helpful tips and recommendations from the pros to help you keep windows and mirrors looking sparkling clean and streak-free.

Clean From Top to Bottom

Cleaning glass from top to bottom will prevent streaking.  This is because cleaning solutions will tend to drop down the glass surface.   Therefore, use gravity to your advantage and let the glass cleaner drip into areas that haven’t been washed yet.   Begin at the top and work your way down to make sure no drips will happen on the glass surfaces that have already been well cleaned.

Wash Windows on a Cloudy Day

Most people would think it’s best to wash windows on a sunny day as it may be helpful in spotting dirt on a glass surface with sunlight streaming in.  The sun, however, can prematurely dry glass cleaner fluid, leaving residue and streaks.   Waiting for a cloudy day to wash your windows will allow the cleaning solution to remain until it is wiped away, leading to a brilliant streak-free shine.

Use a Squeegee

This one simple tool can make all the difference when cleaning glass.  Sometimes the first wipe of a cloth or fabric towel doesn’t remove all of the cleaning solution.  Having to re-wipe areas of glass guarantees to leave streaks on the glass surface.   Using a squeegee makes it effortless to polish each section of a window.  A long-handled squeegee is a must if you are cleaning a tall windows and it will serve double-duty for cleaning shower walls and doors as well.

Clean Corners With Cotton Swabs

No matter how hard you try, residue seems to build up in the corners of glass and it can be very difficult to get to the residue unless you have the right tool.  Cotton swabs are ideal for cleaning those hard to reach areas of windows and framed mirrors.  Cotton swabs are the perfect size and will do the trick!

Try an Old T-Shirt

T-shirt rags are rags made from old t-shirts and apparel scrap materials.  They are ideal for cleaning glass because they will have very little, or no, lint residue.  And, they are just absorbent enough to get a window polished clean.  Using reusable t-shirt rags rather than disposable paper towels is a great way to save money and is more environmentally friendly.  Other good options include Microfiber Towels and specially made Glass and Mirror Cleaning Towels.

Quality Glass Cleaner

Using a high-quality glass cleaner is a must.  SupplyLand’s proprietary Streak-Free Glass Cleaner is an excellent choice for cleaning any glass surface.  Our ammonia based formulation is designed with a special blend of ingredients to wipe away dust, dirt and debris, while leaving a gleaming clean, streak-free surface.  Best of all, you’ll save money compared to national brand equivalents.

Newspapers

Some people swear by a newspaper to polish glass surfaces.  It does work and can work well, but many people don’t like getting newsprint on their hands.  The newspaper also doesn’t hold up very well once it gets wet.  But if you don’t have any towels or cloths handy and the daily news is your only option, it will work in a pinch!  Another option is to wear gloves to keep the ink off your hands.

Avoid Woodwork

Many glass and window cleaners can cause damage to the framed wood areas of mirrors and windows.  Place a small cloth on the wood or windowsill to prevent drips on the wood which can damage to these surfaces.  The cloth will absorb drips of glass cleaner while shielding the wood surface.   It is also important to avoid spraying too much cleaner at once.  Instead, spray the window in small section, working from the top down to the bottom of the glass.

We’re confident that if you apply these glass cleaning tips and recommendations, your next glass cleaning project will go smooth and efficiently and most importantly you will be left with beautiful looking glass surfaces all throughout your home or office.
