What is the best packing tape for shipping boxes?

For most shipping and fulfillment applications, a 2" or 3" polypropylene carton sealing tape with hot-melt adhesive is the standard choice. Hot-melt adhesive outperforms acrylic in cold warehouse environments and bonds strongly to recycled corrugated, which has lower surface energy than virgin kraft. For heavy boxes (over 30 lbs), use a 3" wide tape or apply two parallel strips of 2" tape across the seam. For boxes that will be stacked, handled roughly, or shipped long distances, reinforced paper tape or water activated tape provides a significantly stronger seal. What is water activated tape and why is it stronger than regular packing tape?

Water activated tape (WAT), also called gummed tape or Kraft tape, is a paper-backed tape with a starch-based adhesive that activates when moistened. Unlike pressure-sensitive tapes that sit on top of the box surface, WAT penetrates the corrugated fibers of the carton and bonds as it dries, creating a seal that is part of the box itself rather than an adhesive layer on top of it. What is the difference between reinforced paper tape and filament strapping tape?

Reinforced paper tape has a kraft paper backing with fiberglass filaments embedded in the adhesive layer running lengthwise. It is used primarily for carton sealing on heavy boxes where a standard poly tape would tear under load, the filament layer prevents clean tearing and creates a tamper-evident closure. Filament strapping tape has a clear or translucent polypropylene backing with glass filaments running the length of the tape, designed for bundling and reinforcing rather than sealing. It wraps around packages, pallets, bundles of pipe or lumber, or irregularly shaped items to hold them together during shipment. Reinforced paper tape closes a box. Filament strapping tape secures the outside of a load.

What tape should I use for floor marking and warehouse safety?

Vinyl safety tape is the correct product for warehouse floor marking, aisle delineation, hazard zone boundaries, and safety lane marking. Should I use acrylic or hot-melt adhesive packing tape?

Acrylic adhesive carton sealing tape cures over 24–48 hours to form a very strong, UV-resistant bond. It performs well across a wide temperature range and is a good long-term storage tape for boxes that will sit sealed for weeks or months. It is slightly less aggressive on initial contact than hot-melt. Hot-melt adhesive tape bonds instantly with high initial tack, making it better suited for high-speed packing lines where immediate hold is needed and boxes move quickly. It performs better than acrylic in cold environments (below 40°F) and on recycled corrugated with lower surface energy. For most fulfillment and shipping applications, hot-melt is the preferred choice. For long-term storage and archival applications, acrylic is more reliable.
