What is Mil Thickness?

Mil thickness is a common measurement in manufacturing.  A "mil" is a unit of thickness equal to one thousandth of an inch (.001 inch).

To convert mil to inches, divide mil by 1000.

  • Example:  2 mil / 1000 = .002 inches

To convert mil to gauge, multiply mil by 100.

  • Example:  2 mil x 100 = 200 gauge

How do you measure mil thickness?  Measure mil thickness during production or inspection by using a micrometer or thickness gauge.
