What's the difference between ECT and Mullen Test boxes?

ECT (Edge Crush Test) measures how much stacking pressure a box can handle before the walls give out, making it the standard rating for palletized and bulk shipping boxes. Mullen Test measures bursting strength, how much force a box wall can take before it punctures. Most corrugated boxes sold today are ECT-rated because they deliver strong stacking performance with less material. Mullen-tested boxes are a better fit when contents are sharp or irregular and puncture resistance is the priority. As a rule of thumb, choose ECT for palletized freight and Mullen when loose-loaded items could poke through the wall.

How do I choose the right corrugated box for my shipment?

Start with the product's weight, dimensions, and fragility. For items under 20 lbs, a standard single-wall (32 ECT) box is usually enough. Heavier items in the 20–40 lb range do better in a 44 ECT or double-wall box. Anything above 40 lbs — or anything being stacked on a pallet — calls for a heavy duty double-wall (48 ECT or higher). Always leave about two inches of clearance on each side for cushioning, and make sure the box is snug enough that the product won't shift in transit.

What shipping supplies do I need to start an e-commerce business?

At minimum, you'll need corrugated boxes or poly mailers in two or three sizes that fit your most common products, packing tape and a dispenser, and void fill like packing paper or bubble cushioning to prevent movement in transit. How should I store packaging materials to keep them in good condition?

Keep corrugated boxes, packing paper, and chipboard flat or on pallets in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. Humidity is the biggest enemy of cardboard — it weakens the fluting and reduces stacking strength. Poly bags, stretch film, and tape should be stored at room temperature; extreme heat can affect adhesive performance on tapes and cause film to stick to itself. First-in, first-out rotation is a good habit so older stock gets used before it degrades.
